Dr. Melina has been released. The Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association’s update says supporters helped secure her release, but authorities took her documents and left her in an unfamiliar city. A friend picked her up. ICE kidnapped a veterinarian. Her colleagues are asking us to pay attention.
⚠️ BREAKING NEWS: Caring for animals includes standing up for the people who care for them ‼️
Dr. Melina Orozco Aislant, a Florida veterinarian, was detained by ICE at Phoenix airport on September 23, 2026. The Latinx Veterinary Medical Association says she had work authorization and has asked the veterinary community to help them support her.
AVMA repeatedly claims that they support One Health: the concept that the health of people, animals, and our environment are inextricably connected. But we have yet to see that commitment reflected in how the profession stands up for the people who care for animals, wherever they come from.
LVMA @latinxvet has asked people to share their appeal and contact their local AVMA @avmavets representatives to request support for her and other immigrant veterinary professionals.
Please share Dr. Melina’s story with someone who loves animals and their community.
Should veterinary organizations speak up when colleagues are detained?
