Dr. Mu’ath Abu Rukba smiling with his arms raised. Zak’s tribute reads: “His death should remind every individual and institution founded on compassion that silence is never neutrality. It is surrender. Too many remain quiet while those who embody real courage lose their lives.”

In October 2025, we received reports that our colleague Dr. Mu’ath Abu Rukba, 30, was killed in Gaza by Israeli Occupation Forces.

Mu’ath was a veterinarian who kept saving lives while his own was under constant threat, treating injured animals, feeding the hungry, and working under airstrikes and in the most impossible situation, even after losing his home.

He embodied the very heart of this profession and what we in the animal care space stand for: compassion, and courage.

His death is not just a personal loss. It is a moral indictment of every institution that has continually chosen silence while he, and others like him, have lived their ethics to the very end.

We owe him more than sympathy. We owe him real acknowledgment, justice, and continued action, so that those who dedicate their lives to care are never left unseen again.

Mu’ath’s wife, Rania, and their two young children still need support. Donate to the family’s fundraiser, using the updated link Rania shared through Animal Healthcare Workers Against Genocide.

AHWAG’s tribute to Mu’ath includes memories of his work and inside look at messages from Mu’ath while he was living and working in Gaza during Israel’s latest genocidal campaign.

When institutions built on compassion decide neutrality is safer than humanity, this is exactly how genocide becomes normalized.  Silence in the face of atrocity isn’t neutrality. It’s complicity.

To every AVMA member who feels betrayed by this inaction: withdraw your dues, withhold your participation, and demand leadership change.  Refuse to attend or speak at AVMA events unless it’s to confront these issues directly.

The organization can still be redeemed, but only if its members insist on it.

And to everyone in the broader animal care and health communities: Demand relentlessly that your voice be heard. Continue leaving comments on the AVMA’s Facebook and other official pages, asking for accountability and transparency.
