Annie’s neighbors were begging an armed officer to let her live. He killed her anyway. His own police chief found multiple policy violations and no just cause. The department fired him… But Annie was already dead.
The people who knew her were right there. They tried to protect her, but they had no chance, because one officer held all the power to turn that encounter into a death sentence.
We keep treating these killings as problems with individual officers, and leaving the actual power that makes them possible intact.
Why are any of us surprised then when the next animal, the next family, is still left depending on the judgment of whoever shows up armed by the state with a badge and a gun?
That is what we need to confront about a system that’s been built from the start around coercion and carceral force.
Who gets this kind of authority, and why?
What power do the people in our communities actually have? Are they ever given a chance to be heard BEFORE an irreversible decision is made?
Accountability after a killing cannot be our whole answer. We need to question how much power we give armed officials over our lives in the first place.
This happened in Michigan in October 2023. Share Annie’s story to help us expose this culture. Like and follow, and visit zakgeorge.com to learn more about what we do.
What do you think? Can firing one “bad” cop at a time change the system?
