Davenport Police Officer Ethan Bock responded to a report about four loose dogs. Those dogs were gone when he arrived. Myst – the one neighborhood dog the caller said was not causing problems – was returning home with his family.
Bock told two children to leash him, advanced toward their property, and gave them virtually no time to comply. Within seconds, he shot Myst twice, murdering him in front of his family.
Myst’s body language in the bodycam and security footage is consistent with “distance-increasing” behavior: you’ll see a nervous dog attempting to make an unfamiliar, heavily equipped stranger back away.
No person was bitten or injured by a dog. Myst had no bite history. This encounter could have been ended if the officer used distance, patience, pepper spray, a catch pole, and any number of nonlethal options available, especially when the officer is knowingly responding to a dog-related call.
This is bigger than one officer making one decision. It is about an institution that sends armed enforcers into ordinary community situations, excuses escalation, and calls preventable violence justified. This is not about “bad apples”. The entire SYSTEM is bad.
