Cops all too often default to shooting, rather than genuinely trying to reduce harm.

This is a grown man carrying a gun.

What opportunity did he give her to secure the dogs?

What safer options were available before he fired?

Was it worth risking a human’s life?

Kelly Foy says she was beside her dogs who had gotten loose, reaching for a leash, when an off-duty Buffalo officer shot her nine-year-old German Shepherd. WIVB reports her dogs attacked his dog.

Yes, dogs need to be under control. People are also going to make mistakes. Of all people, those our government entrusts to “protect and serve” our communities with guns should be able to show restraint and use other skills.

Policing is built around enforcement and force. Neither is a substitute for knowing how to handle dogs safely or for trying to reduce harm.

Should we expect more restraint from people armed by our government?
