Grand Rapids’ police chief said this dog was deployed to subdue Da’Quain Johnson nonlethally. Johnson was bitten, then fatally shot.
The bite did not replace the gunfire. It came before it.
The conversation cannot end with the final shots.
If a dog is deployed to subdue someone nonlethally, we should ask whether it helped create a safer outcome, not simply whether officers were justified in shooting afterward.
Who did the dog make safer here?
