A trooper ran over baby geese. And OF COURSE his boss defended him.
Director Mike Hagar @arstatepolice cited the danger of stopped traffic when he defended this trooper’s actions. He said the trooper had been instructed to shoot the birds almost immediately after arriving.
We are talking about baby geese in the road, and killing them was immediately on the table?
Traffic safety matters, but so does asking why violence was an option almost immediately, while a humane response apparently wasn’t something officers were prepared to carry out? For baby geese?
THEN when the public questioned what happened, the agency’s leader defended the trooper and *complained* about the scrutiny.
What incentive is there to change when leadership responds like this?
This is one small example of a huge systemic problem.
We should be demanding institutions that prevent unnecessary suffering and take responsibility when they cause it, whether the lives affected are human or animal.
