Former Thiensville officer Richard McCormick was outside his jurisdiction and had not been dispatched when he approached two loose dogs and fired 16 shots at BD and Ranger.
The dogs retreated. After BD was down, McCormick reloaded and fired six more times. Six minutes later, he fired a final shot at close range.
BD died. @ranger.the.resilient escaped with a bullet in his hip, spent 17 days wounded in the woods, and was eventually rescued and adopted.
The DA said the state could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the initial shots were not self defense, but concluded the post-reload shots violated Wisconsin’s animal mistreatment law.
No criminal charges. The citation issued to McCormick carries a maximum $500 penalty.
